Looking for a Typical Day in Retirement?

Now, you’re retired, you’re probably wondering how would you spend a typical day in retirement. A lot of people would be asking themselves what I will do with my acquired new lease of life with this endless free time.

Retirement to some people can be a rather daunting phase, as they would be wondering how would they spend a typical day in retirement so that they can enjoy a healthy, happy and a long retirement life. However, this shouldn’t be a boring phase it should be an exciting and interesting chapter in your life.

What Is A Typical Day in Retirement?

One day, I asked one of my retired colleague, so my dear now you are retired what’s your typical day as a retiree?

My friend was a bit surprised, instead of an answer as expected, instead I got a question –What is your typical day as retiree yourself? And why do you want to know what I do? What’s wrong with you, why ask such nonsense question? People will start thinking you are losing some of your marbles or you have gone nuts. How can it be normal while you are not working? You know I am retired as such I have all the time in the world. My main job now is eating, watching TV, browse internet or YouTube, WhatsApp etc.

Then a question came into my mind, when you retire do you stop being a normal person or it’s only that you have more time and your daily routine has changed. With this new lease of life, there is a lot we can do in a typical day in retirement so that we can make and enjoy our retirement life. This can be possible with a well planned retirement.

However, after analysing this response, I knew or understood why such a response. Most people think that because you are retired due to old age, as such your days of leading an active life are well gone or your life goes into dull/sleepy mode and you are now officially entitled to being at home and watch TV, or play bingo. However life is not supposed to be like that, as if you are just in the waiting lounge, you can make a change with positive attitude and enjoy your days more than when you were on full time employment. The main important issue is to plan, have a purpose with your life and know what you would like to do on your typical day in retirement on daily basis.

Taking good care of your mental and physical health, is an important aspect in old age. Some of the things that would make your typical day in retirement enjoyable and more exciting would be:

Heath Eating

Health Meals is an important ingredient of a retired person. Join me on my typical day in retirement.

  • Lemon and Ginger

It is always good to start your typical day in retirement with a drink. As such, this is what I normal do, it may be helpful to you too. Before having my breakfast, the 1st thing I must do, I drink a mug of hot lemon water with fresh ginger, this refreshes me a lot and prepares me for the day. This’s my ritual, I have been doing for years and the benefits to my health are great, you can feel inside your body some lightness within yourself.

If you’re a health conscious person and you want to stay health then starting your typical day in retirement with lemon water and fresh ginger is important and would be helpful to your immune system. Remember as you grow older you need to improve and boost your immune system. Lemons are one source of vitamin C which helps boosting your immune system in your body. It has been proven by science that lemon and ginger have a lot of properties which are essential to our bodies and drinking lemon water daily can have an impact on your heath.

If you would like to read more about lemons visit this website Alternative Daily – to quote just a few historical examples “In India, the Ayurveda used lemon to heal stomach issues, referring to its value as a “promoter of gastric fire.”

The Romans used lemons as a cure for all types of “poison.”

Historians report that 12th century Egyptians prized lemons for their “vast medicinal power.”

And in 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary uncovered a new secret weapon—something never tried before by other climbers. It was a special all-natural healing tonic —that research showed could dramatically boost their level of fitness…and thus, increase their chances of finally reaching Everest’s summit” Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism link”

Breakfast has commonly been believed as the “most important meal of the day” As you grow older it’s important to eat your breakfast each typical day in retirement that is packed with protein rich foods. It’s normal some people like to skip breakfast as they regard as not an essential meal. I would like to say that please if you love your body then don’t make a habit of skipping breakfast.

I remember a few years back, I thought in order to control my weight, I would not eat breakfast. I started to skip breakfast as part of my weight controlling measure. However, to my surprise, instead of losing weight I was gaining and my dresses were not fitting. Then I examined what went wrong, I looked at my eating habits, though I was careful with my food intake and eating health food, but I realised that whenever, I skipped breakfast I would go for a snack and most of the time on wrong things. Since then I won’t skip my breakfast, many researchers/studies found out that “breakfast skipping” is strongly associated with weight gain” and people who skip breakfast tend to have poor overall diet and normally make poor food choices such as snacking on nutrient-deficient, high-fat, sugars foods etc.”.

  • Protein Food

It is vital to remember that as we grow older it’s essential to have our daily intake of breakfast comprised of protein-rich food, such as eggs, avocado, mushrooms, coconut oil etc. A number of studies have found that consuming breakfast, particularly a one that is high in protein may be “a useful strategy to increase satiety, improve appetite control, reduce snacking, improve diet quality, reduce food motivation and support healthy weight management. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has established a recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of protein intake at 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram.

As breakfast is a prime time your typical day in retirement as such, in order to maintain a balanced meal, it’s also vital to include high fibre- carbohydrates or “smart carbs” in your diet. However, most of the time we tend to make wrong choices of carbs.

  • Fruits or Smoothie

Another important food in take you should be looking in a typical day in retirement is eating fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy eating pattern. As part of healthy eating we are advised to eat at least five portions daily. As an old saying “One fruit a day keeps the doctor away”

However, it’s a known fact that some people hate or don’t like munching fruits, as such they miss out on vital nutrients, however, nowadays with advanced technology you don’t need to munch your fruits or eat vegetables. There are plenty types of Machines that can do the munching job for you and help you to make healthy and delicious homemade smoothies and soups.

  • The Importance of Physical Exercises In Older People
  • Why should I go out at this time, I need my bed and sofa? Just ask yourself what would make you go out of your comfort home/zone? It’s a well-known fact that physical exercises in older people can be a big challenge and most of us perhaps don’t even dare to try and do one exercise a day. Let alone just going outside for a walk. However, with determination everything should be possible and going out for exercise/walking/ jogging shouldn’t be a problem, it should be what you should be looking for in a typical day in your retirement, it should be one your daily highlights. Especially, with this lock-down, that’s the only time when you can visit the outside world and be away from your four corners. Get out of the house go for a walk either in the park if there is any near your place or into quite streets.

It’s vital to remember that as you grow older the mental and physical state changes and it needs some help and boost to stay mentally and physically balanced or fit. As such it’s very helpful to know the importance of physical exercises in older people so that you’re mentally and physically fit and live a happy and enjoyable retirement life.

Spending some time outside your normal zone that is your house can also improve your moods such as being miserable and feeling lonely.

Chat to your friends either via WhatsApp’s, Facebook or just a simple telephone call would also help to kill your day. Or even arrange to go for a walk with a friend but observing the social distance.

My schedules nowadays have been long walks into parks or going to supermarkets which are a bit far from my house so that I can have a long walk. Preparing freshly cooked meals to have with my husband if it wasn’t this lock-down, I would be having dinner with some friends while watching a homemade video by my son using his cherished Nikon Camera.

    • Working from Home and Being my Own Boss

One thing, I cherish and enjoy most is being my own boss and working from home, nobody gets to control my time and what I do at any given time. The only controlling factor would be how much money I make working from my own comfort zone and the times suitable to my schedule.
